Across the Divide was filmed at the new Hollywood studios of Chicago-based Selig productions. Though details of the storyline are obscure, the reviewer for the trade magazine Variety observed that the film invoked memories of the classic western yarns of Bret Harte. In addition, the film was praised for its extensive use of authentically "western" locations. This utilization of real locales was still a novelty in 1909, when many eastern-based westerns were shot in New Jersey, or staged before the most obvious of canvas backdrops. Within a few years, "outdoor" pictures like Across the Divide would be the rule rather than the exception. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
