(geology) A continental margin that is characterized by earthquakes, volcanic activity, and orogeny resulting from movement of tectonic plates.

A type of destructive plate margin characterized by ocean trenches, earthquakes, andesitic volcanic chains, and young fold mountains. Active margins are alternatively known as Pacific margins after the active margin found where the Nasca plate collides with the South American plate.
