active stretching

Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Email

A stretch performed by assuming a position and then holding that position, using only the action of the appropriate agonist muscles. In the process, the antagonists are stretched and relaxed by reciprocal inhibition. Typically, active stretches are held for about 10 s. One example of an active stretch is bringing the leg up high and holding it there only by the action of the agonist leg muscles. Compare passive stretching.
