Review

An exquisitely sung selection of quality repertoire, Ada Dyer's eponymous sophomore disc is a trillion times stronger than its predecessor, Meant to Be. That first chapter in her solo efforts lacked riveting production and lasting material, but this one is rich with sturdy arrangements and emotionally fulfilling compositions. The highly animated vocalist is comfortable in each setting, ranging from the radiant mid-tempo jam "Everything You Want Me to Be" to the intense, symphonic ballad "Crazy Love" and the funky single, "That's What I Look for in a Lover." "Crazy Love" was subsequently recorded by Sheena Easton, Patti LaBelle, and Luther Vandross. All of them possess household names, but none can touch Dyer's classic episode. With significant players including Nathan East, Paulinho DaCosta, Chuckii Booker, and Robbie Buchanan, Motown invested significantly in the production of this set, considering the very mild performance of the first. But even more surprisingly, the powers that be didn't feel compelled to back it up with even a pinch of the promotion it deserved. Anyone who appreciates a truly soulful voice singing meaningful songs should do whatever it takes to get this album. ~ Justin M. Kantor, Rovi
