Adam Freeland is the DJ, label-head, and producer most often hailed for the fusion of breakbeat and techno (sometimes branded nu-skool breaks) on righteous mix albums like 1996's Coastal Breaks and 2000's Tectonics. Based in Brighton, Freeland began DJing in 1991, originally mixing deep house and later drum'n'bass. After becoming an in-demand DJ around Britain and to a lesser degree Europe for his mixing skills and innovative sound, Freeland released his first mix album, Coastal Breaks, in 1996. He began producing around the same time, teaming with Kevin Beber as Tsunami One and hitting it big in underground circles with the single "No. 43 With Steamed Rice Please" on Fuel. The second volume in the Coastal Breaks series followed in 1998, and he formed his own label, Marine Parade (named after a seaside road in Brighton). In 1999, another Tsunami One production -- "Hip Hop Phenomenon," recorded with American trance producer BT -- became a hit. Earning scads of best-new-DJ reviews from magazines as well as no less an authority than Carl Cox, Freeland returned to the mix-album realm in 2000 with Tectonics, licensed to American audiences through Ultra Records. An avid fan of surfing and snowboarding, Freeland has DJed at numerous snowboarding events as well as clubs worldwide. Adam Freeland is a UK-based DJ and producer associated with breakbeat based electronic music. He was a resident of Brighton and is now based in Los Angeles. As a producer, he formed half of Tsunami One with Kevin Beber, and released a solo album as Freeland; as a DJ & Remixer he operates solo under his own full name. He is the owner / creative director of record label Marine Parade, which has released material by artists including Evil Nine, ILS, Alex Metric and Jape.
In 1996, Adam Freeland released the Coastal Breaks album. Since then Adam has released the Tectonics, On Tour and Global Underground mix albums, as well as a FabricLive mix, and groundbreaking Back To Mine. Freeland's debut artist album Now and Them, released in 2003, relied on influences from punk, hip hop, electro, dub, reggae and rock. It featured the hit record 'We Want Your Soul', with his remix of Sarah Vaughan's 'Fever' nominated for a Grammy and his personally requested mix of The Doors 'Hello, I Love You' receiving critical acclaim. His latest artist album Cope™ features Tommy Lee of Mötley Crüe playing drums, Alex Metric co-produced it, Twiggy Ramirez plays bass. Joey Santiago of The Pixies and Tony Bevilacqua of Distillers / Spinnerette play guitar. Plus there are collaborations with Soundpool, Vocals from Brody Dalle (Distillers / Spinnerette) and Gerald V. Casale from DEVO. Freeland's new frontman Kurt Baumann also sings on four songs.
One of Adam's singles, Mind Killer, is featured in the 2002/2008 Dreamcast, PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 title, Rez (Known on the Xbox 360 as Rez HD) under the song title of "Fear". The song is featured during the fifth and final stage of the game, known as "Area 05". The game's remixed version of Mind Killer is also featured on the soundtrack released called "Rez Gamer's Guide To...", also under the title of "Fear".
