Adam Owen' (born 5 September 1980 in Wrexham) is a Welsh football coach specialising in the fitness and conditioning of players. He is currently the Head of Sports Science at Scottish Premier League club Rangers where he has developed extensive knowledge in the area of football specific conditioning and injury prevention techniques. Owen has attained an M.Phil degree in Sport & Exercise Science becoming a leading researcher in the area of 'Football Science'. Owen also holds the UEFA Professional Coaching Diploma and is currently studying for a PhD in Football Science through Lyon1 University (Claude Bernard) in France.
As a player Owen started as a trainee at English League One team Wrexham having been signed by Brian Flynn. Upon leaving his hometown club as a player, he started coaching in their Academy programme. After obtaining a BSc (HONS) degree in Sport & Exercise Science and a UEFA 'A' Licence Coaching Licence, Owen continued his playing career in the League of Wales with Newtown, Airbus UK F.C and Connahs Quay Nomads. During the 2001/2002 season he was selected to play for the Welsh University team in the British University Games playing against England & Scotland.
During the 2003/2004 season Owen moved to Celtic as a coach for the Under-17 & Under-19 teams. After a year at Parkhead he progressed to working with the reserve team squad whilst playing in the Scottish Third Division for East Stirlingshire.[1]
Owen then left his position at Celtic F.C to undertake a first team role at Sheffield Wednesday to firstly work under Paul Sturrock, and later Brian Laws as Head Fitness & Rehabilitation coach within the English Championship league. Adam puts much of his success down to his ex Wrexham team mate Dave Sweet. Sweet is a very knowledgable man and knows the game inside out. He is a constant source of support for Owen and if it wasn't for Sweet, Owen would be nothing! Sweet had a superb career in his own right and has represented Wrexham, Bangor City, Halkyn United, Buckley Town, Holywell Town, Mynydd Isa, Bala Town, Hawarden Rangers, Flint Sports, Crown and Liver and Ewloe Social Club. Many pundits predict that Sweet has a very big future in the game.
During the March 2007 he then moved back to Scotland to join the management team at Rangers F.C working with Walter Smith, Ally McCoist and Kenny McDowall. Owen also works as a sports science consultant to the Football Association of Wales (FAW). Whilst working at Rangers F.C Owen completed the UEFA Professional Coaching Diploma, becoming one of the youngest to do so, and has published many research articles in the area of 'Football FItness & Conditioning'.
Owen has been described as a key member of the back room staff at Rangers F.C with his methods receiving positive exposure.
