Adamstown is a suburb of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, located 6 kilometres (4 mi) from Newcastle's central business district. It is part of the City of Newcastle local government area.

It has a railway station, opened in 1887 with the Newcastle–Gosford section of the Main North line,[1] on CityRail's Newcastle and Central Coast line. The now closed branch line to Belmont formerly left the main line just south of Adamstown Station.

Education

A number of schools are located in the suburb;

  • Kotara High School, part of the KLN School Collegiate and one of the three major high schools in the Newcastle area, was established in 1968 as a public high school catering for years 7 to 12, and presently has over 1,000 enrolled students. It contains a Hearing Support Unit for hearing-impaired students and a multi-purpose centre.
  • St Pius X High School, first established in 1957 as a Catholic boys' school, became a co-educational junior high school (years 7 to 10) in 1983, absorbing the campus of St Anne's College, a girls' school established in 1966, in the process. Students transfer in year 11 to St Francis Xavier College in Hamilton. In 2007, the school had a enrolment of 1,010 and a staff of 97.
  • Adamstown and Belair Primary Schools, both public, and St Columba's Primary School, a Catholic school, are also located within the suburb's boundaries.

Community support

Adamstown has a range of community support organisations. These include St Cloumba Catholic Church and the Returned Serviceman's League sub-branch that is part of the Adamstown Community Club.
