Adana Metro is a rail rapid transit system extending 14 km on the north-south corridor of Adana. It has 13 stations and can transport 21,600 passengers per hour one-way. Total journey of the metro takes 21 minutes including all the stops.

History

Rapid transit in Adana was initiated in 1988 by the request of the mayor Aytaç Durak and the Çukurova University rector Mithat Özsan to the Ministry of Transportation. Feasibility report is completed on May 30, 1990 by the consortium of PMBI A.Ş. and Brinckerkoff Int.Inc. The report is approved by the State Planning Agency and the construction of the rapid transit system was included in the 1993 investment program. In 1996, the project is contracted to Adtranz-Alarko-ABB Electric Consortium for 340 million USD.^[2]

To accommodate the new residential developments in the project area and to make the integration of northern and southern Adana better, Metropolitan Municipality decided to make an amendment to the project by extending the line to southern Adana. Southernmost point in the initial project was D-400 state road. Amendments are approved by State Planning Agency in 1999 and the construction of the metro started on January 28, 1999.

Unexpected costs that rose during the construction of the metro demanded new funding for the project. Metropolitan Municipality made a request to State Planning Agency for a new funding, but the request was declined. Construction of the metro stopped in 2002. After 6 years, the municipality could get an approval for a new funding of 194.2 million USD and the construction resumed in 2008.

On March 2009 the metro is partially opened to service in between Hastane and Vilayet stations. After 3 months of free service, this section of the metro closed to service again to make the connection with the section that is under construction. The metro fully opened to service on May 14, 2010.

Adana Metro is a 13.926 km long two-track line which 3.521 km is underground, 5.332 km is elevated and 5.073 km is on the ground. Line starts from the metro-car depot west of the Hospital for Mental Health. Following Turgut Özal Boulevard, the line reaches Anadolu Lycee, then turns south and follows Alparslan Türkeş Boulevard, crosses TCDD rail tracks near the City Hall and enters Southern Adana passing D-400 state road. Then following the way west of Kocavezir Commercial Center and the Hürriyet Police Station, it reaches Seyhan River. Crossing the river just north of the Regülatör Bridge, the line heads north, again crosses D-400 state road and ends next to Yüreğir Bus Terminal.

The metro fleet consists of 36 cars each of them having the capacity of 311 passengers. A vehicle runs with 3 cars attached, carrying up to 933 passengers. The system can transport 43,200 passengers per-hour both-ways and 660,000 daily. The vehicles speed up to 80 km/h in between the stations, and the trip time between Hastane and Akıncılar stations is 21 minutes including all the stops. The metro is fully secure and monitored by SCADA remote controlling system.

Stations

The metro has total of 13 stations, which 2 are underground, 5 are elevated and 6 are on the ground. All the stations are equipped with escalators and disabled elevators.

Service

The metro serves from 6:15am to 9pm everyday, running every 15 minutes.^[4] Several bus and dolmuş lines are connected to the stations. The metro is part of the Metropolitan Municipality Bus Department(ABBO) network where an adult fare costs 1 TL for Kentkart holders which allows a passenger to have up to 1 hour one-way trip.

Future Extensions

Adana Metro will be extended from Akıncılar to Çukurova University main campus. The extension will be 9.5 km. long and will have 7 stations. The project is contracted in January 2010 and the construction is expected to start after an agreement is made with the Çukurova University.^[5] As the extension will not be a new line, it will be built in accordance to the current system, and it is expected to cost 210 million US$. Adana Metro will then extend to 23.5 km. serving at 20 stations.^[6] There are also plans to run a suburban rail line on the existing railway with connections to the metro.
