Adda of Bernicia

Wikipedia: Adda of Bernicia

Adda was the third known ruler of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Bernicia which he ruled from 560 to 568.

Adda was one of several sons born to Ida, the first ruler of Bernicia, as was his successor Æthelric.

Although some sources claim that he led the Bernicians to victory against Peredur and Gwrgi of Ebrauc, this hardly seems probable. The Battle of Caer Greu is almost always given as 580, some 12 years after the date most often given for Adda's death[1]. It is feasible the king involved in that battle was Ælle of Deira. Certainly, Ebrauc ceased to exist as a British kingdom after Caer Greu, with Deira taking over its territory.

Nothing else is known for certain about Adda's life or reign. The earliest authorities differ widely on the order and the regnal years of the Bernician kings between the death of Ida and the beginning of Æthelfrith's rule in 592/593.
