In key of C, the chord F–A–C–D and similarly in other keys, i.e. the subdominant chord plus the 6th from the bass (major 6th added to major or minor triad), or, looked at from another viewpoint, the first inversion of the (diatonic) supertonic 7th. Frequently used by Delius, Mahler, and in jazz.
