Additional accompaniments

Top

Term for the extra instrumental parts added to scores, usually by Handel or Bach, to make them conform to a later taste for fuller textures. The practice had begun by 1784, with the Westminster Abbey Handel Commemoration; Mozart is one of those who wrote them, for Messiah (1789) and other works. In the 20th century similar additional accompaniments were provided for operas by Monteverdi.
