AddThis is a widely used social bookmarking service founded by Dom Vonarburg and owned by Clearspring that can be integrated into a website with the use of a web widget. Once added, visitors to the website can bookmark an item using a variety of services, such as Facebook, MySpace, Google Bookmarks, Pinterest, and Twitter.[2]

History

  • March 2006, work begins on AddThis.com. The domain name was purchased from its previous owner in the same month. The website was launched at the DEMO Conference in September 2006.[3]
  • March 5, 2007, AddThis announces it had served over 100 million widgets to websites that use its service. The website was growing at a rate of 100% per month, and the service was registering about two million views a day.[4]
  • September 30, 2008, the website is purchased by Web 2.0 company Clearspring for an undisclosed sum. Together, the companies reach an audience of more than 200 million monthly viewers.[2][5] Commenting on the acquisition, Clearspring's CEO and founder Hooman Radfar believed that it would "create a large platform of targeted content and capitalize on the next evolution in online advertising—widgets". He also said, "Today both of our products are services to publishers and advertisers. Ultimately we want to build an ecosystem with developers of new services, applications, and advertisers, that delivers a simple experience to consumers."[2]
  • May 10, 2011, AddThis raises $20M in venture funding from IVP and others [6]
  • September 25, 2011, AddThis hires ex-Yahoo exec Ramsey McGrory as CEO [7]
  • November 1, 2011, AddThis buys data science startup XGraph for undisclosed sum [8]
  • April 27, 2012, AddThis releases sharing for Pinterest, a content sharing service that experienced over 50% growth month over month from January 2012 to February 2012. [9] [10]


  • May 10, 2012, AddThis becomes official brand name of Clearspring [12]
