Ames, Adelbert (1835-1933) Union army officer, born in Rockland, Maine. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for heroic service at First Bull Run (1861), where he refused to leave his post despite a serious wound. As brigadier general of volunteers in the Spanish-American War (1898), he participated in the siege of Santiago and the Battle of San Juan Hill.
