If you haven't got time for the pain, or for some of the unwanted side effects brought on by painkillers, Adolor hopes to help. In keeping with the movement toward improved pain management, the company is developing drugs that alleviate some of the side effects of certain pain treatments. Adolor's only marketed product, Entereg, is used as a treatment to aid in gastrointestinal (GI) recovery in patients following bowel resection surgery; the drug is designed to block the negative GI effects of opioids (like morphine) used to treat postoperative pain. Adolor was acquired by Cubist Pharmaceuticals in late 2011.
