The second moon of
Jupiter, also known as Jupiter XV; it was discovered in 1979 by the American astronomers David Jewitt and G. Edward Danielson from Voyager images. Adrastea measures 23 × 20 × 15 km and orbits 57,300 km above the Jovian cloud-tops, close to the outer edge of Jupiter's ring system. It appears to act as a
shepherd moon and, together with
Metis, as the source of the material for the rings.
