Dungeons and dragons is a general term for the whole game, which has a lot of versions. The original game which was only titled "dungeons and dragons" was released in 1974, and "advanced dungeons and dragons" in 1977. Then there's D&D 2e, Advanced D&D 2e, D&D 3e, D&D 3.5, and the current installation, D&D 4e.

Which one is most played may be hard to know, but it seems that D&D 4e and D&D 3.5 are the most popular.
