In this series of 13 films, the evolution of modern art is traced from its beginnings in the early 1900s. Artists began to turn their backs on traditional methods of producing artworks, and the results were surprising and sometimes revolting to exhibition goers and other patrons of art. The movement that began in Europe traveled to America, where artists were influenced by the shocking and bizarre works done by Europeans. Abstraction in the hands of Americans emerged in many styles, from the calligraphic canvases of Franz Kline to the serene works of Mark Rothko. ~ Alice Day, Rovi
