In this installment of the series, the focus is on Die Brücke, a group of German artists who developed the expressionism movement in 1906. Taking their inspiration from Van Gogh, Ensor, and Munch, they strove to achieve an emotional quality to their work that centered around a certain degree of torment and dissatisfaction. The Adventure of Modern Art: Expressionism analyzes the painters who were Die Brücke: Schmidt-Rottluff, Kirchner, and Heckel, and also looks at the works of Otto Dix and Georg Grosz, as they expressed their feelings about the war. Other artists featured include Nolde, Klimt, and Meidner. ~ Alice Day, Rovi
