Henri Matisse was the leader of the fauves, and The Adventure of Modern Art: Fauvism looks at the factors that influenced his works. Almost from the very beginning of his training, Matisse was taken with color. As his development continued, he became fascinated with light as well. These two powerful elements took on a new life on his canvases, and after the Salon d'Automne show, which he shared with Derain, Marquet, and Vlaminck, they became known as the "fauves," or wild beasts. In their hands, color became an emotional force, and light radiated from their paintings. ~ Alice Day, Rovi
