Advenza Freight Ltd. was founded in 2001.[note 1] The company obtained a safety case in 2002,[2] and license to operate from the Rail Regulator (UK) on 16 November 2003.[3][note 2] The company initially sought guarantees from Network Rail on timing and regularity of train paths,[5] but was only able to obtain permission to "spot bid" for free train paths,[5] and so was unable to reliably secure paths for its trains to be able to commence commercially viable operations.[2] It then sought guarantees from Network Rail through the Office of Rail Regulation regarding the provision of paths for its trains,[2] in Jan 2008 it had reached agreement with Network Rail, and was to start running containerised palletised freight from London (Barking) to Glasgow.[6]
In 2005 Cotswold Rail acquired Advenza,[7] in 2006 Advenza gained permission to operate passenger trains on the UK (Network Rail) network.[8][note 2]
As well as operating locomotives for Cotswold Rail's passenger charters, the company undertook transport of rolling stock,[9] as well as operating several scrap metal trains including workings to Cardiff from Stockton on Tees,[10] and Shipley,[11] and to Sheerness from Hitchin;[12] the company having begun leasing 102t GLW box wagons from VTG in 2008.[13] A fly ash train from West Burton Power Station to Tilbury was operated briefly, starting 2 June 2009.[14]
The company was wound up on 7 October 2009.[9]
Advenza operated using two Class 47 (47237 and 47375),[15] two Class 57s,[16] and Class 66 locomotives; four former Direct Rail Services (DRS) Class 66/4 locomotives (66406 to 66409) were acquired and reclassified as subtype 66/8 with numbers 66-841 to 66-844.[17] The Class 66 locomotives were acquired in the summer of 2009, shortly before the company ceased business, and 66-843 is thought to have not have been used in revenue service.[18]
The company also leased other locomotive types including Class 20s,[19] and operated trains for Cotswold Rail using its passenger train operating license.[20]
