1. Shrine or sacellum within a temple cella, either a large niche or a pedestal supporting two or more columns carrying an entablature and pediment thus forming a frame or canopied housing for a cult-statue.

2. Architectural frame around a doorway, niche, or window-aperture consisting of two columns or pilasters over which is an entablature with pediment, like a miniature distyle building: such an opening is said to be aediculated.
