A place on the River Jordan near Salim, where John baptized (John 3:23). Some have identified Aenon at Khirbet Ainoun near Tubas in Samaria, but it seems more likely to have been at Ain Ibrahim close to Tell Shalem (Salim/Salumias) in the Jordan Valley, 12 km south of Beth Shean. This fits the situation provided by Eusebius (Onom.40:1) as being 8 Roman miles south of Scythopolis. The Madaba map shows another Aenon, on the left bank of the river, opposite Beth Abara, where, according to a 6th-century Christian tradition, there was a cave known as Safsafas, in which Jesus dwelt while he was visiting John the Baptist.
