Aesculapius
Aesculapius, the Latin form of the name of the Greek god of healing, Asclepius. His cult was brought to Rome from the famous temple at Epidaurus in Argos in 293 BC, after the Romans had consulted the Sibylline books (see SIBYL) because of a severe pestilence. The temple, with a sanatorium, stood on the island of the river Tiber.
