The Afrikaans Wikipedia (Afrikaans: Afrikaanse Wikipedia) is an Afrikaans language edition of the Web-based free-content encyclopedia Wikipedia. The project was started on 16 November 2001, and was the 11th Wikipedia to be created.[1] As of 12 November 2011, this edition has over 20,000 articles[2] and is the 80th largest Wikipedia by number of articles.[3] Aside from South Africans and Namibians, this Wikipedia is also used and edited by people from overseas countries.
It is the fourth-largest African language Wikipedia, outside of the colonial languages, and was the first African language Wikipedia to pass 10,000 articles.[4] It has since been surpassed by the Swahili, Yoruba, and Malagasy Wikipedia.
On 4 November 2009 the Afrikaans Wikipedia's Main Page was redesigned.[citation needed]
