Katherine Dunham and her ensemble perform eight Caribbean-spawned songs, from Haiti, Trinidad, Cuba, and more. Dunham's own vocals are expressive and impressive, but she's also joined by singer/percussionist Julio Mendez and percussionist/composer La Rosa Estrada. It was all an early exercise in authentic world music that still holds up a half-century later, and ought to be unearthed along with anything else of Dunham's from the Decca vaults. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi
