Review

One wishes this four-side, gatefold compilation was a straight reissue, or at least had all the tracks from each session. Strangely missing, for instance, is "Caravan" from either Machito's Flip and Bird session or Dizzy Gillespie's Afro LP. As a survey, introduction, or only available copy, it serves its purpose just fine, however. Of particular worth are the extensive, detailed liner notes. That arranger Chico O'Farrill's role is given its due is commendable (we all know Gillespie and Machito). Once in a while, the original LPs turn up, but don't overlook this compilation in the meantime. ~ Tony Wilds, Rovi
