Review

This improvisatory piece is performed on an original instrument, built by the composer, called the electro-acoustic sound palette. It is made from a painter's palette which has a variety of thin rods mounted vertically around its perimeter. The rods are amplified with a contact microphone, and the output of the device is then modified by several processing or "effects" boxes. Additional objects may be placed on or near the palette, and the sounds they make may be amplified by the contact mike. The resulting otherworldly sounds may have sliding pitches, a repeated knocking timbre much like that of a traditional woodblock, quick shuttling or rubbing sounds delayed and overlapped in reverb, quick tremolos like those produced by metallic strings, and so on, making for a surprisingly rich and varied texture. ~ "Blue" Gene Tyranny, Rovi
