AGAS (Ain't Going Anywhere Soon)

Album Review: AGAS (Ain't Going Anywhere Soon)

Review

AGAS is a limited-edition six-song EP released along with Ponyoak, Kleenex Girl Wonder's second full-length record. To judge from its clever packaging, AGAS is only intended for dedicated followers. From the exterior, it is difficult to tell what the CD really is. The back cover shows three full-color pictures of video games, complete with the message "Prepare To Enter a 3-D Space Age Fantasy Dreamworld" - the joke is that the album pretends to be a game for your CD player. If you don't know that Graham Smith is Kleenex Girl Wonder, then outside of the "soundtrack by Graham Smith" and "KGW Gameworks" taglines, there is nothing else that identifies the CD's author. Aside from "Ain't Going Anywhere Soon" (the lead single from Ponyoak) and "Response and Responsibility," there is little else of musical merit on AGAS. On the eight-minute long "Language," Smith generically fumbles around with instruments in the studio. The other three songs are also uninspired, lack the poppy melodies that grace Kleenex Girl Wonder's first two releases, and are hindered by stale, irksome vocals. It's no secret why AGAS' packaging is deceptive - the record is exclusively for completists. ~ Bob Gendron, All Music Guide
