Plot

Japan is faced with a burgeoning population of elderly and society's mechanisms for dealing with this older generation are not up to the challenge. Aging in Japan: When Traditional Mechanisms Vanish focuses on a new 24-hour bathhouse, one of many, where senior citizens can find refuge. Those who frequent the bathhouse will stay for hours, because they do not want to be a burden on their adult children, or because they are alone. This film shows that despite their feelings of isolation, they are finding companionship and new friends in their new environment. ~ Alice Day, Rovi
