Agnes of Cleves (1422-1446) was a daughter of Adolph I, Duke of Cleves and his second wife Mary of Burgundy.
Agnes married in 1439 to Charles, Prince of Viana, who was titular King of Navarre. However the couple had no children and Agnes died on April 6 1448, aged only twenty three or twenty four. After Agnes' death, her husband wished to remarry, his choice was Infanta Catherine of Portugal. The marriage never took place since Charles died.
Agnes her husband would have been the secure King and Queen of Navarre but the ill-feeling between Charles and his father, John II of Aragon increased when in 1447 John took for his second wife Juana Enriquez, a Castilian noblewoman (of a bastard cadet line from Castilian kings), who soon bore him a son, afterwards Ferdinand II of Aragon, and who regarded her stepson as an interloper. When Joanna began to interfere in the internal affairs of Navarre, a civil war broke out, and in 1452 Charles, although aided by John II of Castile, was defeated and taken prisoner. Charles died sometime after Agnes, he had died with no legitimate issue to succeed him.
After the deaths of Charles and Agnes, Charles' sisters Blanche and Eleanor both became Queen of Navarre in their own right.
