Biography

Headed by guitarist/bassist/drum programmer Scott Hull (also of Pig Destroyer and formerly of A.C. as well), grindcore nut-cases Agoraphobic Nosebleed have existed in various forms since 1994. Their bleak, punishing sound mixes together caustic vocals, harsh (and inhumanly fast) drum-machine beats, and Hull's Earache-schooled guitar riffing. Their songs are short and compact, in most cases clocking in at less than a minute long. Their lyrics are often as unorthodox and/or inscrutable as the band's name and song titles (e.g., "Chalking the Temporal God Module," "The Fatter You Fall Behind," "Lives Ruined Through Sex") would seem to suggest. Topics such as crackpot apocalypse theories, homophobia and misogyny, drug conspiracies, mind control, rampant capitalism and consumerism, and bio-terrorism have all surfaced in their songs; and are often addressed in ambiguous, free-associative ways, interspersed with plenty of tasteless scatological outbursts, sometimes with a humorous slant and sometimes not.

Following a few split and EP releases and a couple of lineup shifts, Agoraphobic Nosebleed's first "full-length" -- the 26-song, 19-minute Honky Reduction -- came out in 1998 on Relapse Records and was recorded by the lineup of Hull and vocalist/electronics manipulator Jay Randall. The following year saw the release of a 6" EP entitled PCP Tornado as well as a split CD with the Boston, MA, hardcore band Converge entitled The Poacher Diaries. For The Poacher Diaries, Agoraphobic Nosebleed's lineup was expanded to include a second vocalist, J.R. Hayes (also the lead vocalist for Pig Destroyer). Agoraphobic Nosebleed's second full-length, the long-promised Frozen Corpse Stuffed With Dope, finally came out in 2002, once again on Relapse. This time around, Hull and Randall were officially joined by vocalist Carl Schultz and bassist/vocalist Richard Johnson (of Enemy Soil and the Index, and also a member of Agoraphobic Nosebleed in their earlier days). The album also featured guest vocal appearances by Hayes as well as members of Benumb, Necrophagia, Cephalic Carnage, and Brutal Truth. ~ William York, All Music Guide

Agoraphobic Nosebleed (abbreviated as ANb) is a grindcore band formed in 1994 in Springfield, Massachusetts, United States[3]. Its line-up has changed often during the years, leaving the only permanent member Scott Hull (guitars, drum programming), also a guitarist in Pig Destroyer. The current line-up also includes vocalists Jay Randall, Kathrine Katz of Salome, and Richard Johnson of Enemy Soil and Drugs of Faith, who also plays bass guitar . Agoraphobic Nosebleed are one of the most well-known drum-machine grindcore bands, and have influenced many drum-machine grindcore bands.[4]

Biography

Through the use of drum machines, the band has been able to play songs with over 1000 BPM. The lyrics usually revolve around subjects such as drugs and violence, though many of their songs reveal ideologies similar to those held by the punk culture.

The band is known for the conciseness of its songs: Their album Altered States of America features 100 songs (including one hidden) in just under 22 minutes, with many songs clocking in at 5 seconds or less, and the longest song clocking in at 1:45.

Agoraphobic Nosebleed played their first live set at the 2003 New England Metal and Hardcore Festival. As their appearance was unscheduled, Pig Destroyer cut their set short so they could play two songs and an intro.

In 2006, Hydra Head Records reissued Agoraphobic Nosebleed's 6" PCP Torpedo as a double disc set entitled PCP Torpedo/ANbRX. The first disc consisted of the 10-song, 6-minute original single. The second disc is over an hour's worth of remixes of songs from PCP Torpedo by breakcore and noise music artists such as Xanopticon, James Plotkin, Merzbow, and Justin Broadrick.

Agoraphobic Nosebleed have many releases forthcoming. They are working on a split 7" with The Endless Blockade for Relapse Records, a split 7" with Agents Of Satan (on Relapse, scheduled for 2010), a 7" with Lack Of Interest for Deep Six Records, a CD/LP with Despise You for Relapse Records, a split 12" with Thrones for Hydrahead and a Split 5" with ANS (label unknown). Randall is currently working on Drum Machine Gun 2 as well as doing a collaborative 7" with Wadge and a collaborative 12" with Black Mayonnaise.

In 2009, the band released the album Agorapocalypse on Relapse, available as a CD, LP, and longbox CD. The split 7" with Crom was released a month later on Regurgitated Semen Records.
