abbr. for aromatic hydrocarbon; the name of a genetic locus in higher organisms that governs biological responses to some aromatic hydrocarbons. The proteins it encodes include cytochrome P450 1A1, a liver microsomal monooxygenase that oxidizes a variety of unrelated compounds, including xenobiotics such as the environmental carcinogens, benzo[a]pyrene and 3-methylcholanthrene. This enzyme is induced by these compounds and, more potently, by polychlorinated biphenyls such as 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), acting through the Ah receptor. The 5′-flanking region of the gene for this enzyme contains several short sequence motifs known as xenobiotic response elements (XREs). See ARNT.
