Ahimaaz

1. The father of King Saul's wife, Ahinoam.

2. One of the sons of Zadok, the high priest in David's reign (II Sam 15:27; I Chr 6:8, 53), and the father of Azariah (I Chr 6:9). He was one of the priests who carried the ark of the covenant out of Jerusalem when David fled the city at the time of Absalom's rebellion. King David ordered Zadok and Abiathar to return to the capital to await information from Hushai concerning Absalom's plans, and their sons Ahimaaz and Jonathan were stationed at En Rogel to serve as liaison; they relayed to the king the information brought to them by a maidservant (II Sam 15:24-37; 17:1-17). While there, they were detected, and hid in a well in a house in Bahurin. Absalom's men searched the place but a woman had camouflaged the mouth of the well; Ahimaaz and Jonathan escaped and joined David (II Sam 17:18-21).

After Absalom's defeat and death, Ahimaaz, begged Joab to allow him to bring the news to David; but Joab refused, sending another messenger. Upon Ahimaaz' insistence, Joab finally gave way allowing Ahimaaz too to announce the victory to David. Ahimaaz arrived first, having outrun the other messenger, but he left it up to the latter to report the bad news of Absalom's death which he himself omitted (II Sam 18:19-33).

3. A son-in-law of Solomon, married to the king's daughter Basemath (I Kgs 4:7, 15). He was one of the 12 officials appointed by Solomon to provide food for the king's household one month out of the year from the territory of Naphtali. (Some suggest that he may be indentical with Ahimaaz No. 2, the son of Zadok).
