Latakia Sports City (Arabic: المدينة الرياضية باللاذقية‎), known also as Al-Assad Sports City, is a sports complex in Latakia, Syria. It was completed in 1987 to host the 1987 Mediterranean Games.

The complex has an are of 156 hectares, lying along the Mediterranean coastline with a length of 2.5 km. It is owned by the Government of Syria and operated by the Ministry of Territorial Administration.[1]

Facilities

The complex includes:[2]

  • Latakia Sports City Stadium: the main football and athletics venue with a capacity of 45,000 spectators.
  • Three indoor sports halls (basketball, handball and volleyball), with a capacity of 5,000; 1200 and 800 seats respectively.
  • Two multi-functional mini halls for several types of Olympic sports.
  • Four football training gounds.
  • Olympic size (50x21 m) swimming pool with a diving pool (21x20 m) that has a capacity 2,500 seats, a covered swimming pool (25x12.5 m) and a pool for amateur swimmers.
  • Modern horse racing park with equestrian sports facilities.
  • Tennis club: the main court with a capacity of 1,000 seats along with 10 training pitches.
  • Hotel and yacht club.
  • Contemporary art museum.
