Ahmednagar was twice in its history an independent state.The following are the two examples thereof.

Nizam Shahi sultans of Ahmadnagar

The Nizam Shahi dynasty of Ahmednagar or Ahmednagar Sultanate was established in 1490 by Malik Ahmad Shah. The kingdom lay in the northwestern Deccan, between the states of Gujarat and Bijapur. It secured the great fortress of Daulatabad in 1499 and added Berar in 1574. It lasted until 1636.

Maharajate under the descendants of Maharaja Sagramsinhji

In 1792 Ahmednagar was given to Maharajadhiraja Maharaja Shri Sagramsinhji Sahib Bahadur as his personal maharajat.The following rulers of his line were:

  • Maharajadhiraja Maharaja Shri Sagramsinhji Sahib Bahadur 1792-1798
  • Maharajadhiraja Maharaja Shri Karansinhji Sagramsinhji Sahib Bahadur 1798-1835
  • Maharajadhiraja Maharaja Shri Prithisinhji Karansinhji Sahib Bahadur 1835-1839
  • Maharajadhiraja Maharaja Shri Balwantsinhji Prithisinhji Sahib Bahadur 1840-1841
