Review

A new solo project by Brian Johnson (the former guitarist from Seattle metalcore outfit Himsa, and sadly not catfight-lunged AC/DC yowler Brian Johnson, which would at least have been amusing), Hell Promise deliver more of the same standard-issue aggression as Johnson's former project, but with a near-total lack of personality or ideas. Taking over lyrics and vocals as well as guitar, Johnson proves himself to be adept at neither: those few lyrics that are decipherable are completely pedestrian attempts at Danzig-style violent aggression and misanthropy that don't even come across as particularly sincere in their hostility. Johnson's utterly ordinary vocal style, a monochromatic bark that doesn't even have the unintentional humor of the Cookie Monster grunt, is an even worse feature. As for the music, the standard high-speed shredding guitar, blast-beat drumming, and low-impact basslines are all present and accounted for, but nothing particularly stands out.
