This reviewer expected Ain't No Doubt About It to be a good CD when he saw Band of Oz ("Angel"), as well as Percy Sledge ("Big Blue Diamonds") and Tower of Power ("Happy 'Bout That") listed among the artists, plus old standby Dobie Gray. What he wasn't prepared for was the profound beauty of Luther Kent's opening number "Um, Um, Um, Um, Um" -- in terms of quality, that number is like a rocket assist, lofting everything else here to a starting point as high as they normally reach, and from which the whole collection soars higher still. The Memphis All-Stars ("Ain't No Doubt About It"), Dink Perry ("Back to You"), the Tyn Tymes ("Emerald Eyes"), they all hold their own with big names on this 16-song collection, which doesn't have a weak moment on it -- even Dobie Gray's re-cut version of "The In Crowd," which fits perfectly with the rest of the contemporary material here. And to add to all of the virtues in the listening, the annotation, though a little bit sketchy, is informative and helpful. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi
