Review

Somethin' Smith & the Redheads were one of the most unique vocal groups of the '50s, mixing old standards like "It's a Sin to Tell a Lie" (their biggest hit) and "In a Shanty in Old Shanty Town" with a distinctive, staccato vocal style that could be more gimmicky than appealing when taken to extremes. Throw in a banjo, and that just about sums up the group's sound. Ain't That Somethin' has 20 tracks, including their four hits from 1955-56, and a few tracks that reveal a hint of rock & roll influence. Somethin' Smith & the Redheads never made a huge name for themselves, but the new twist they put on the oldies still makes for some interesting listening. ~ Greg Adams, Rovi
