Air America

A proprietary airline of the CIA acting as an ordinary civilian air transport firm in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. Air America supported the U.S. Air Force in dangerous, covert operations (often at night or with cloud cover) within enemy-occupied areas of Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and Cambodia. The CIA shut it down in 1976.

Air America grew out of the Civil Air Transport (CAT), founded in China in 1948 by Gen. Claire L. Chennault and Whiting Willauer, and purchased by the CIA in 1950.
