History

Air Dominicana was incorporated on 9 May 2007 in Santo Domingo with a capital of US$10 million. The airline was expected to begin its operations in May 2008 with a Boeing 737-300, but those services were cancelled, and now the launch date is September 1 2009. Its main purpose was to promote tourism, therefore its main hub was expected to be located at Punta Cana, but now the airline selected Santo Domingo as major hub.

Ownership

Air Dominicana is owned by Air Europa with the Dominican Government as a minority partner. The airline was also owned by Futura International Airways until the airline failed to re-finance itself therefor ceasing operations on 8 September 2008. Air Europa is now expected to take the remaining shares which Futura left behind. Air Europa says it will help the airline in all areas to help Air Dominicana get off the ground with success.

Service Commencement

Air Dominicana, the new flag carrier of the Dominican Republic, originally planned to launch services in May 2008, from its former Hub, Punta Cana. Operations are now expected to commence on 1 September with daily service to Miami and New York from their new hub, Santo Domingo.

In November 2008 the airline applyed for a 129.14 FAA certificate. The Department of Transportation (DOT) has given the permits, also the FAA and TSA has given the green light to the airline to be able to enter into the US. The permits were issued on 15 December 2008.

The airline website currently states flights will begin on 1 September 2009 to Miami and New York City.
