In 1926, the Materiel Division, under the Office of the Chief of the Air Corps, served four major functions: research and development (R&D), procurement, supply, and maintenance. In 1941, these four functions were split between two organizations, the Materiel Command (R&D and procurement) and the Air Service Command (supply and maintenance). In 1944, the R&D function was allocated to the newly established Research and Development Command, with the logistics group responsible for procurement, supply, and maintenance. After several name changes, the Air Force Logistics Command was inactivated on July 1, 1992, with the creation of the Air Force Materiel Command, which integrated the functions of the former Air Force Systems Command and the Air Force Logistics Command.
