Review

Because of Nepal's proximity to India, the music of Nepal is as greatly influenced by Indian music as it is by instrumental music. In fact, there is an area in the Himalayas that is called the central Indo-Nepalese Himalayan area where the different people share some similarities between their music. Singing and dancing are part of the celebration of all aspects of everyday life, as well as religious events or festivals. The musical instruments in this region, largely influenced by Indian instruments, are the following: the Nepalese Sarangi, the Basuri (the Nepalese version of the Indian Bansuri, a bamboo transverse flute), the Bai (a straight wooden flute), the Ponga (a long copper horn), plus a good number of percussion instruments (drums such as the pachima, a large double-headed drum, bells and cymbals, and more). A most enchanting music. ~ Bruno DeschĂȘnes, Rovi
