  1. The area of fields and runways where aircraft can take off and land.
  2. An airport.

(DOD) An area prepared for the accommodation (including any buildings, installations, and equipment), landing, and takeoff of aircraft. See also alternate airfield; departure airfield; landing area; landing point; landing site; main airfield; redeployment airfield. (DOD Note: In all entries involving "airfield" or "aerodrome," the US uses "airfield," and NATO uses "aerodrome." The terms are synonymous.

Any area on which aircraft may land, take off, park, and be serviced. It includes buildings and installations to support flying and maintenance operations. Also known as an airport, airstrip, or aerodrome. On aeronautical charts, airfields are depicted as in the illustration.
