This broadcast from a French concert was Sonny Rollins's last recording before his surprising retirement; he would not resurface until late 1961. Along with John Coltrane, Rollins was the most important tenor saxophonist of the period and during the trio set with bassist Henry Grimes and drummer Kenny Clarke heard on this CD, Rollins really stretches out on "Woody'n You," "But Not for Me" and "Lady Bird"; the individual selections range in time from 15:50 to 18:35. Although not as essential as his studio recordings of the period, this decently recorded concert performance will be savored by Sonny Rollins collectors. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
