Buddhism Dictionary:

Ajapāla-nigrodha

A banyan tree not far from the Bodhi Tree, located in Uruvelā on the banks of the Nairañjanā river. The Buddha spent a week meditating under it shortly after his awakening and revisited the spot many times in his life. It is the site where the god Sahampati interceded with the Buddha to teach the Dharma, and also where the devil Māra tried to persuade him not to, and instead to enter nirvāṇa immediately after his awakening.
