(Japanese). Term deriving from the Sanskrit word ācārya and meaning a senior monk who is qualified to take disciples, teach novices, and conduct ordinations. In Japan, such monks might also serve as liaisons with the imperial government. The name was also applied to masters in the esoteric lineages of Tendai and Shingon who were qualified to take disciples and conduct esoteric rituals.
