Ajok and the First Rainmaker

African Mythology: Ajok and the First Rainmaker

Lotuko/Sudan

Ajok, the supreme being, is the creator of everything. The Lotuko also believe in an invisible power called Naijok, conceived chiefly as bringing death and disease. The spiritual and temporal head of every community of the Lotuko is the rainmaker. Spirits of the dead intercede with Ajok for rain.

The first rainmaker was a mythical person called Ibon, who came to earth in the form of water at Itaraba, near Logurun; he took the shape of a man, married a wife, and left behind him a child and some rain-stones.
