'New Castle' from akhal 'new' and tsikhe 'castle' or 'fortress'. Fortifications were present on the site before Prince Ivan Paskevich, commander of Russian troops in the Caucasus, assaulted the Turkish defences at Akhiska in 1828 and built a new fortress.
