Yoshio Kurahashi's second CD came out in April 2001. This time, instead of offering a CD of only solo shakuhachi pieces, he is being joined by a special guest, the well-known Chinese pipa player Wu Man living in the U.S. Besides Kurahashi's four solo honkyoku pieces, they perform two traditional Chinese pieces on shakuhachi and pipa, and Wu Man improvised something in accompaniment to a Japanese honkyoku piece. In his solo pieces, Kurahashi's playing is as deeply spiritual as he is with his previous CD, Kyoto Spirit. This spirituality is felt as well in the Chinese pieces, a spirituality clearly shared with Wu Man. ~ Bruno Deschênes, Rovi
