Akon is a Senegalese American five-time Grammy Awards nominated hip hop/R&B singer, songwriter, record producer, entrepreneur, philanthropist and businessman. He has sold over 11 millions albums worldwide.[1] He has had more than 35 US Billboard Hot 100 songs and more than 350 guest appearances on songs from artists ranging from Michael Jackson to Gwen Stefani to Dr. Dre. He is the first solo artist to hold both the number one and two spots simultaneously on the Billboard Hot 100 charts—an achievement he attained twice in 2006–2007. Akon is one of the most popular artists and producers in music industry today.
He rose to prominence with the hit single "Locked Up" from his 2004 debut album, Trouble. The album also contains his first worldwide hit single, "Lonely". The album reached number One in the UK and number eighteen in US, and shipped over 1.6 million copies and was certified 2x platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). His second album, Konvicted, earned him three Grammy Award nominations for the singles "Smack That" featuring Eminem and "I Wanna Love You" featuring Snoop Dogg. The RIAA has certified the album triple platinum status with 3 million units sold in the United States. The album became the second best selling record of the year on the Billboard 200 charts.[2] To date, It is Akon's most successful album. Akon's third album, Freedom, It was released as a download on December 1, 2008, and in stores December 2, 2008. Although there are some vulgarities on Freedom, it does not carry the Parental Advisory warning, making it Akon's first album not to do so. The first single released from the album, "Right Now (Na Na Na)", which peaked at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 was Akon's 12th top 10 hit on the chart. The second single is "I'm So Paid", featuring Lil Wayne and Young Jeezy. "Beautiful", featuring Colby O'Donis and Kardinal Offishall, the third single, debuted and peaked at No. 19 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
